Careers » Frequently Asked Questions
What is the firm's atmosphere and culture?
Because of our size and culture, Brown McCarroll is a place where associates have the opportunity to work closely with supervising partners on pending matters. They typically receive more attention and feedback than in a larger firm with more associates.
Seasoned lateral attorneys will find engaging colleagues who look for opportunities to work with them on new business development efforts, and to support commonly held professional development interests.
How flexible are the practice groups and industry teams; can you work in more than one area?
Lateral attorneys are welcome to join the practice group or industry teams in which they have skills or experience to benefit clients. New associates are generally asked to focus on one area of practice. However, assuming other practice groups could utilize associate help from time to time, there is a fair amount of flexibility for associates who wish to explore other areas of practice.
How often will associates travel for work; where, why, and for how long?
For associates, travel can range from seldom to several times a week, depending upon practice area and client needs. Generally, because we are a regional firm, most travel is within the state and may be completed, round-trip, in a single day.
What is Brown McCarroll’s pro bono policy?
Brown McCarroll remains committed to pro bono-related charitable contributions and community involvement. Attorneys accomplish pro-bono work principally through the volunteer legal service programs and nonprofits that the firm supports, and associates are given "hard time" credit for this work upon compensation review.
What is the billable hour requirement for associates within the firm?
Generally, associates who bill 2000 hours are eligible for bonus consideration.
At what point will I work directly with clients?
Depending upon practice area and the clients served, many associates will have an opportunity for immediate exposure to clients. Due to our mid-size, associates are expected and encouraged to assume more responsibilities sooner than those at larger firms that utilize associates primarily as researchers. This means that client care and support will be more common place for our associates – an advantage our current associates enjoy, appreciate and believe to be essential to their professional development and advancement.
How broad and diverse is Brown McCarroll's client base?
Our client base is extremely broad and diverse, and tied to a wide variety of key industries, including automotive, banking and financial services, chemicals, communications and broadcast services, construction, health care, hospitality, education, energy and utilities, entertainment organizations, insurance, investment firms, manufacturing, mining and excavation, nonprofit or private associations, professional services or consultancy groups, public agencies and governments, religious organizations, retailers, suppliers, distributors, wholesalers, real estate developers, technology companies, and transportation entities. We have created multi-disciplinary industry teams for several of these categories to effectively serve our clients.
